WILLIAM GRESLEY JONES was born on 16th May, 1810, although he is quoted in the “Gresleys’ of Drakelowe” as born of parents married in Liverpool and later resident in Holiwell, the parish records of neither reveal any clue as to his birth or early upbringing. He first married Anne Daniel and is believed to have spent his honeymoon at Rhuallt Hall. He built Bodlondeb Hall (later called Bodlonfa) and is reputed to have set up toll gates across the Holiwell St. Asaph Road. He had considerable wealth and influence but in one of the North Wales Bank crashes he became much reduced in circumstances. Bodlondeb was sold and he retired to one of his farms at Gwaenesgor where in a smaller way his influence was still important. The ancient church at Gwaenesgor has a plaque to his memory and after his death his widow continued to manage the village’s two inns. It is believed that his first child was christened Hardy (or Hardy Gresley) his godfather being Captain Thomas Hardy of Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship. But no facts supporting the existence of this child can be found.
His recorded issue were:- 1.Roger Gresley born 25th February, 1839, at Holway Holiwell. 2.Philip Thomas born at Bodlondeb and baptised with Roger at Cwm 22nd September, 1840. 3.Mary Elisabeth Anne baptised 8th March, 1844. 4.Clement William Robert baptised 12th April 1846. Sometime between April 1846 and May 1849 his wife Anne died (no record of her burial can be found) and on 16th May, 1849, William Gresley Jones married his servant Elizabeth Davies and had further issue:- 5.William Gresley baptised 25th February 1850 6.Robert John baptised 30th May 1851 7.Elizabeth baptised 9th September 1852 8.Alfred Peter baptised 3rd April 1854 9.Jane Elizabeth baptised 12th May 1855 10.Thomas Terrick 11.Edwin baptised 12th December 1859 12.Walter baptised at Gwaenesgor 9th April 1864 and died there when eight years old. 13.Tertia born 1871 but of whose baptism no record can be found. She died at Gwaenesgor in 1877 aged 6 years.
